SHOULD CHURCHES ABANDON TRAVEL-INTENSIVE SHORT-TERM MISSIONS IN FAVOR OF LOCAL PROJECTS?

Three missions experts weigh in.


Here is an article from Christianity Today on short term missions.  Personally,  I am in favor of short-term missions.  A short-term mission is an awakening to each participant, regarding the conditions in the third world and about the  faith of those, who live with much less than we.  Also, if a short-term mission is well run, it does make a difference in peoples lives. I've heard many favorable testimonies in Honduras on this subject. Nevertheless, the criticisms in this article are helpful in planning future short-term missions and avoiding the many pitfalls.

This year we have eleven (11) students, who are receiving aid for their studies.  In Honduras, the public school system is free, but the children must pay for books, uniforms, back-packs, and miscellaneous fees, which means some poor kids can't attend without support.  These scholarships help address that problem. We chooses the kids based on financial need and their desire to study.   Here are the childen: At Church of Annunciation, in Rincón de Dolores, in the mountains north of Tegucigalpa: Genesis - 1st grade, age 6. Christmas Party at Cerro de Hula

It all started over breakfast.   Santito, who cleans our five story building, told me she does like not Christmas.  When I asked her why, she explained that she lost her mother when she was thirteen. After that her father showed little interest in her.  Her childhood was without Christmas and hard. It was a time that made her sad.  Knowing that Our Lord always loves a party  , I asked if she would like to throw one in celebration of Christmas for herkids and the community.   With a smile, she said, "Yes." Consecration of Buen Pastor (Good Shepherd) Church

Bishop Allen came to Santa Maria, located close the Nicaraguan border,  to consecrate Buen Pastor Church on Sunday, June 26, 2016.   Three local churches, a mission team from Florida and people from the town came to the event. An estimated five hundred (500) people attended the service. Thirty six (36) people were confirmed or received into the church.   Here are some picture of the event.
